- China Yangtze Power, a state-owned company, headquartered in Beijing, has 82 hydroelectric units, 58 of which have a capacity of 700 megawatts or more.
- China Yangtze Power owns the Three Gorges project along the Yangtze River. With a capacity of 22.5 gig watts, the Three Gorges Project is the largest hydroelectric facility in the world and the largest power plant in the world. The Three Gorges project contains 34 turbines (32 x 700 MW and 2 x 50 MW).
- China Yangtze Power also operates the 13.86 GW Xiluodu Hydroelectric Power Plant along the lower Jinsha River, which opened in 2013, and the 6.4 GW Xiluodu Hydropower Plant along the Jinsha River, which began operations in 2012.
Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras - 44.2 GW
- Brazil's state-owned Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras (Eletrobras) operates 48 hydroelectric power plants throughout Brazil.
- The main hydropower projects operated by Eletrobras are the 8.3GW Tucurui plant in the Para, the 2.12GW Itumbiara hydropower project in the Goias, and the 1.82GW Teles Pires hydropower project in the Mato Grosso.
- The Tokoroi Hydroelectric Plant, built along the Tocantins River, generates power using 25 turbines. This was the first large-scale hydroelectric project built in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and has been generating power since 1984.
- Eletrobras hydroelectric plants are scattered throughout the Brazilian regions, and the largest Eletrobras hydroelectric plants are located along the rivers São Francisco, Tocantins, Parana, Paraíba do Sul, and Grande.
The company is set to increase its hydropower generation capacity further by bringing the 11.2 GW Belo Monte hydropower plant along the Xingu River in the Para state into operation this year. The Belo Monte is expected to become the world's third-largest hydroelectric power plant in terms of energy once completed.
Hydro Quebec - 36.7 gigawatts
Hydro-Québec, owned by the Quebec government, has an installed hydropower capacity of 36,767 megawatts generated from 63 hydroelectric plants across the Canadian state. The power of dozens of them is more than 1 gigawatt.- The largest hydroelectric project in the Hydro-Québec portfolio is the 5.6GW Robert-Bourassa generating station built along the La Grande River. The hydroelectric project, formerly La Grande-2, was equipped with 16 turbines with a capacity of 351 MW each.
- Construction of the Robert Burassa Generating Station began in 1974, and the first power was generated in the 1979. The development is part of the James Bay Project, the series of hydroelectric power stations constructed along the La Grande River by the Hydro-Québec with a joint venture. The generation capacity is 16.5 gigawatts. It is planned that the hydroelectric system will be expanded to 27 GW in the future.
The 2.8GW La Grande-4 hydropower project, the 2.4GW La Grande-3 power plant, and the 2GW La Grande-2-A power plant are some of the other facilities that are part of the James Bay project.
